Where History, Elegance and Romance Reside

Hannibal, MO – In the heart of Mark Twain’s homeland, the Garth Woodside Mansion offers guests all of the romance, simplicity and veneration of a bygone era, in a setting befitting of the greatest of American Heroes.  This 1870’s mansion, the former home of one of Samuel Clemens’ oldest friends, has been restored to its original splendor, now offering eight guest rooms and a wonderfully secluded guest cottage.  Voted among the top five inns in the world in the Best of Awards, and in the Top Ten Inns in the Midwest by Recommended Inns of the Midwest, Garth Woodside Mansion is the perfect choice for those seeking historic, luxury lodging.   With new cottages underway, and a restaurant offering fine dining planned for fall, 2004, Garth Woodside Mansion will soon be the perfect choice in Northeastern Missouri for functions, weddings and reunions.

For those who believe greatness begets greatness, Garth Woodside Mansion offers the best place in the Midwest to experience the spirit of Samuel Clemens, better known as Mark Twain.  Samuel Clemmons visited the Garth Mansion on a number of occasions, throughout the 1870’s, and his favorite room has been restored to its original opulence.  In fact, several of the pieces the Garths brought to their home are still there for guests to enjoy.   Unique features found at the Garth mansion include the 1869 Steinway Square Grand Piano, and the inn’s famed flying staircase, an architectural phenomenon.

The inn’s eight large guest rooms all feature elegantly appointed antiques and private baths.  Wallpapers and draperies have been carefully selected, and customized to blend with the 19th century antiques.  Yet, carefully all the modern amenities that travelers seek have been integrated into this settings.  Thus, guests will find individual heating and air conditioning controls, evening turn down service, and comfy robes and slippers for guests’ use.  Each room offers a hypo-allergenic feather bed, along with triple sheeting using high thread count sheets.  What sets Garth Woodside’s rooms apart are the wonderful vintage nightshirts that guests are encouraged to wear to breakfast (and many do), and the take-home toothbrushes, compete with Garth’s logo.  Room rates range from $99 to $349 per night.

The Dowager Cottage, overlooking the pond, offers the ultimate in secluded and intimate accommodations.  Built from stone in 2002, this dream house incorporated everything that innkeepers John and Julie Rolsen found they loved in their travels.    (please turn for more...)

Thus two fireplaces are found here to insure that those soaking in the bathroom’s double whirlpool have a remote controlled one, and the bedroom in this romantic cottage naturally has to have the second one.  The bedroom reveals a king size bed, and while you never thought it possible, 800-thread-count sheets, which feel like satin. A second story deck overlooks the inn’s pond, accessible through a wall of glass in the cottage’s living room.  Here on the deck, guests find an alternate option for soaking in the new six-person Hot Springs hot tub.   And for those who love luxurious bathrooms, this cottage offers the ultimate – a ten-by-four-and-a half-foot shower with eleven shower heads, including one in the center that rains down, plus double sinks, lest you think a detail was overlooked - a bidet in the water closet.   The kitchenette reveals meat and veggie platters awaiting guests of the Dowager Cottage, and the living room sports all the appliances of the alphabet – a TV, VCR and DVD, not to mention a BOSE theater surround-sound system and a 300-volume DVD library.  For those seeking total seclusion, a four-course breakfast can be delivered and set up in the private kitchen, or guests can join others at the inn.  Rates range from $349 for the first night to $295 for subsequent nights.

Speaking of breakfasts, they are an adventure in themselves.  Breakfast is served in the elegant setting of the Garth dining room.  Guests gather at the longest dining room table in Northeastern Missouri, and the conversation usually centers on the menu.  Each morning guests are treated to fresh fruits, home-cooked pastries and muffins, and entrees fit for a king.  An endless supply of teas and freshly brewed coffee is available too.  At least half the guests arrive as instructed, wearing their nightshirts and slippers to breakfast.  Just about the time guests are beginning to get hungry again, Innkeeper, Julie’s Rolsen brings out her famous chocolate-chip cookies every afternoon, and sodas, bottled water, hot tea, coffee and hot chocolate are available any time at the inn.

Just under one hundred miles from St. Louis, MO, the Garth Woodside Mansion offers insight into adventure, Tom Sawyer-style.  Located in the Mississippi River town of Hannibal, MO, it’s no wonder that this region has been dubbed “America’s Home Town”.  For those who would rather not venture far, the inn’s gardens are all open for guest’s enjoyment, as well as the trails that wind through the inn’s estate.   And for some, just sitting on the inn’s beautiful porch and watching the hummingbirds is all it takes to unwind from the stress of a busy week.
